Dolwyddelan Castle, 1896
Snow lies deep around Dolwyddelan Castle in North Wales. Within its walls, the antiquarian Lord Jeremiah de Haersbie has gathered a small and carefully chosen company to witness the unveiling of a newly discovered medieval codex, a manuscript that may call into question the long-accepted relationship between Wales and the English Crown and unsettle certain assumptions of Church and Empire alike.
Among those present are a retired general, a bishop troubled by private doubt and his devoted chaplain, a distinguished historian and his protégé, a woman reputed to possess uncommon psychical insight, and Professor Owain Morgan, philosopher and scholar of the emerging science of the mind.
By the early hours of Christmas Eve, something has occurred that no one can fully account for.
In a place where evidence proves fragmentary and testimony uncertain, Owain must look beyond what is seen and said, and attend instead to the deeper patterns of thought and behaviour. Fear, pride, and the quiet workings of conscience begin to take shape.
As the storm tightens its grip on Dolwyddelan, silence settles over the castle like a second snowfall.
What lies beneath it is not easily brought to light.
